Yorkshire Enduro Club (YEC)
YEC Brief History
The YEC grew from a bunch of riders who met by chance while riding trails in Yorkshire and started to meet first in their own homes then at various well known West Yorkshire pubs such as The Grove in Leeds, The Barrack Tavern in Bradford and the Albion in Leeds. Even back then in the seventiesRed Bottom Shoes they must have recognised a need to fight for the survival of their sport as they styled themselves “The Route Use Preservation Society”.
As well as enjoying riding local legal trails, competing in other organised events and social activities like club trips to Sheffield Arena and curry nights, the regular members meet primarily to organise the club’s 2 flagship events, The Yorkshire Enduro and the Ryedale Rally both of which take place in the North Yorkshire forests around Pickering.
The Yorkshire Enduro:
This takes place each September, (21st September for2008) in Cropton Forest just north of Pickering. It constitutes a round of the North of England Championship but as well as expert riders, it welcomes sportsmen and novices too. It consists of 3 or 4 laps of forest terrain including fire roads and tracks. There are one or two special tests which will be timed on the second and subsequent laps.
Facilities provided at the start and finish always include adequate, safe parking on farmland (with the opportunity to camp), portaloos and a refreshment wagon.
The Ryedale Rally:
Formerly a one day event taking place in mid June, this is now a 2 day event and has shifted to early July (5th & 6th July) for 2008. It takes place in two North Yorkshire forests at Langdale and Cropton as well as having a liaison section of moorland road. It constitutes a round of the “Big Bike Challenge” but is designed for trail bikes, 4 stroke enduro bikes and all “big bikes” with an offroad capacity. The start/finish/camping area has ample space for bikes, vehicles and tents/motorhomes and is in secluded farmland. As a two day event, camping, portaloos and refreshment facilities including a beer/lager/wine bar and marquees for shelter are provided and included in the entry fee. A social event with supper is provided on the Saturday evening.
The Yorkshire Enduro Club is an association with a relatively small number of leading members (men & women), who meet at least once a month, primarily to support their sport by organising top quality events. The club’s full membership however, includes all the participants in those events and draws riders and supporters from throughout the UK, the Republic of Ireland, the Armed Forces and beyond. Most of the regular members travel to the club’s current very welcoming headquarters at The Valley Inn, Drighlington from across West Yorkshire and the southern borders of North Yorkshire.
